The Moscow region and the central part of Russia are gradually saying goodbye to Indian summer. In the next two weeks, forecasters promise the first snowfall, which may overtake the Moscow region and the capital in the first half of October. At the same time, the northern and eastern regions of Russia faced early snow back in September, while the south of the country retains warm and comfortable weather for recreation. A detailed weather forecast for Moscow and other regions of Russia is available in the Izvestia article.

When snow will fall in Moscow: forecast for October

In Moscow and the Moscow region, the first snow usually falls in October, sometimes in late September, but the exact date depends on the weather conditions of each year. In recent years, winter came late, and snow did not fall until December. According to Alexander Ilyin, a forecaster at the Meteo forecasting center, despite the rather warm beginning of autumn 2025, the probability of snowfall remains in the first half of October.

"If in the synoptic processes in the first decade of October, meridional air mass transfers from north to south will persist, then in the first half of October, in this scenario, the weather may reach the first snow," the expert said.

At the end of September, nighttime temperatures will begin to drop to around +5 degrees, which usually heralds the onset of snow.

At the same time, Evgeny Tishkovets, a leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, said that the peak of Indian summer in Central Russia has already passed, and golden autumn will come in a week in the capital.

When it gets colder in St. Petersburg

Changeable autumn weather is expected in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region in late September and early October. The daytime temperature will be kept in the range of +9...+15 degrees. It will often be cloudy with short-term rains, fogs and increased winds are possible in places.

Snow in the region is likely to appear in late September and early October, primarily in the northern regions of the Leningrad Region. Wet snow is expected to fall there during this period. In St. Petersburg itself, the first snowfalls are forecast closer to the beginning of October, when the temperature drops to +3...+5 degrees at night.

Forecasters note that so far the precipitation will mostly be rainy, but the cold northern air masses will bring frosts at night, creating the prerequisites for the appearance of snow.

Weather forecast for October by region

Already in mid-September, residents of Yakutia, the Republic of Tyva and the Krasnoyarsk Territory saw the first snow. According to Alexander Ilyin, precipitation is also expected at the end of this month in the European territory of Russia and in several regions of the North-Western Federal District.

"In the Murmansk Region, in the Nenets Autonomous District and in the north of the Komi Republic, wet snow can be seen as early as the end of September," the forecaster explained.

According to the Yandex Weather and Gismeteo portals, October 2025 will bring a transition to cold weather in most regions of Russia, but with some special features.

In the Volga Federal District, including Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod and Samara, October is forecast with daytime temperatures of +11...+15 degrees. The amount of rain will increase by the end of the month.

In Ufa, Perm, Yekaterinburg and Chelyabinsk, a steady cold snap is expected with daytime temperatures of +10...+15 degrees and night frosts. At the same time, the southern regions will maintain warm weather with daytime highs of +15...+20 degrees and little precipitation.

In the Siberian Federal District, including Novosibirsk, Omsk, Kemerovo, Krasnoyarsk, October will be cool, with daytime temperatures of +6...+14 degrees, with frequent rains and high humidity. In Khabarovsk, Vladivostok and Blagoveshchensk, a humid mid-autumn is expected with temperatures of +15...+23 degrees during the daytime and a large number of cloudy days.
