The UN pointed to Israel's disinterest in discussing a cease-fire in Gaza.
The Israeli authorities are currently not interested in "serious negotiations" on a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres pointed this out at a press conference on September 16.
"Israel does not seem interested in serious negotiations on a ceasefire and the release of hostages," he told reporters.
The Secretary General of the organization added that peace in the Middle East would be impossible without resolving the issue of the creation of two states.
"The two-state solution remains the only viable alternative to preserving peace. Without a two—state solution, there will be no peace in the Middle East, and extremism will spread throughout the world, which, in my opinion, will have extremely negative consequences," Guterres said.
On the same day, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk called on Israel to stop the destruction of the Gaza Strip. The Commissioner noted that many countries are calling on Israel for peace, but the conflict is further escalating, during which the population of the Gaza Strip may not survive the lack of humanitarian assistance.
The UN Commission of Inquiry into the Events in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Israel has recognized Tel Aviv's actions in the Gaza Strip as genocide. After that, Israel launched a ground operation to occupy Gaza City. It is accompanied by massive strikes throughout the enclave. Later, the country's defense ministry noted that the IDF would strike Gaza until it defeated Hamas and freed the hostages. According to the Axios portal, the ground operation received the support of the United States.
