"Increased thanks to Karpin's trust"
The coach of Dynamo Moscow, Valery Karpin, unsuccessfully started working with the team, which he headed in June. After eight rounds of the Russian championship, she is in ninth place, 10 points behind the leading Krasnodar. One of the few players who has improved during this time in the blue and white team is midfielder Denis Makarov. The 27-year-old, who joined Dynamo four years ago, has rarely played in the main squad since April 2023, having lost the trust of the previous head coach Marcel Lichka.
But under Karpin, he returned to the start and remains the club's top scorer in the current championship, scoring three goals. In an interview with Izvestia, Makarov commented on the result of the recent Moscow derby with Spartak (2:2), explained how he had improved in recent months, and also told who replaced Karpin at Dynamo during his departure to the Russian national team, which he also trains in combination with work in the club.
— Is a draw against Spartak more of a loss of two points than a gain of one?
— 100%, even 1000% is a loss. We brought two goals to ourselves and scored only two. Every time for several years in a row, this has happened to us in several matches per season. I don't know why this is happening. There is no explanation for this. But we will try to fix the situation. I think the game against Spartak was good on our part.
— Can we talk about serious progress in the game during the two-week break for the national team matches?
— In my opinion, the pause was beneficial. We did a good job during this period, we trained well. We watched and disassembled old games, made certain adjustments to our actions. And as a result, we showed high-quality football in the derby. There was a necessary struggle and aggression on our part. There were good chances to score even more than those two goals. Unfortunately, not very good execution of chances and mistakes at our own goal prevented us from winning. But the very quality of the game allows us to expect that our results will improve soon.
— Who was in charge of the team in the absence of Valery Karpin, who left for the national team?
— Sergey Viktorovich Parshivlyuk.
— Did he completely do the same thing as Karpin?
— Yes, Valery Georgievich continued his line. We must give Sergey Viktorovich his due — he did a good job in the absence of the head coach. The whole team was happy. Everything is fine.
— To what extent have the Dynamo newcomers who came in the summer already adapted to the team?
— Of course, everyone needs time to adapt. But the guys came to us at a good level, so within a month they should fully understand all the requirements of the coaching staff.
— Since the end of the season before last, you have hardly played in the championship, but in the current draw, with the arrival of Karpin, you returned to the base, leading in the number of goals for Dynamo in the RPL. What made you so transformed?
— It's all thanks to the coaching staff and the head coach personally. Thanks to their trust. They let me play — I'm getting playing time this season. Much more than in the past. At the same time, I should note that when I played a lot in the Russian Cup matches last season, I had a lot of productive actions. It's just that the previous coaching staff didn't really see it. But now the situation is changing: there is healthy competition in the team, and everyone is fighting for a place in the squad. Thanks to Valery Georgievich and his staff, that there is such an opportunity to prove your level and get into the base.
— When there were constant rumors in June about your possible transfer to Krylia Sovetov, could Paris Nizhny Novgorod and Torpedo believe that you would spend the first third of the new season at Dynamo?
— No one can send me anywhere without my consent (smiles). In this regard, I was waiting for the new coaching staff to start working, and I was aiming to convince them at the training camp that I was worthy of playing for Dynamo. I was going to fight for a place at the base of the team. Moreover, I have a contract with the club until the end of this season. And I want to work it out completely, give all my strength to Dynamo, and then we will discuss the future.
— During the period of playing for Rubin, you were remembered for your constant vivid individual actions, like scoring for Zenit after a long dribble on a poor-quality field at the Kazan stadium or scoring for CSKA with a shot from outside the penalty area. Why don't you have almost anything like this at Dynamo?
— Well, in August, I scored against CSKA (1:3), going from the center of the field and hitting from outside the penalty area into the upper corner.
— Those goals for Rubin were still perceived more emotionally due to the fact that they were victorious at the end of the matches. And your goal for Dynamo against CSKA happened at 0:3, when the opponent almost guaranteed victory for himself.
— I hope that I will continue to give this out more often. Still, when you get the trust of the coaching staff and playing practice, you feel more confident on the field. Everything depends on it. If you miss a year and a half, being on the bench, then the confidence is not the same.
— Towards the end of the match against Spartak, Konstantin Tyukavin entered the field for the first time in six months. How do you see his condition from the outside?
— Excellent condition. He could even score in this match. But maybe I just didn't have enough confidence, because Kostya missed a lot. In any case, we are very happy that he is out, and we expect him to be on the field in the next match.
— After the defeat by Dynamo Makhachkala (0:1), before the pause for the national team games, Valery Karpin's words caused a resonance that he was ready to retire. He was later asked about this topic during one of the briefings in the national team, receiving approximately the same answer. How did you perceive the hype around these words?
— I didn't perceive it at all. I wasn't paying attention at all.
— Is it possible to expect that by the next break for the national team games you will be able to get to the leading group?
— I don't know what to expect... The main thing here is to work at the maximum from match to match and play the same way as in the match against Spartak. Then we'll start gaining points more actively. And it's too early to talk about any global issues. First of all, you need to catch your game, get three points in each of the matches and move forward.
