The same cosmetic product can be beneficial in one case, and in another it can cause discomfort, irritation, or even illness. Nadezhda Pospelova, a cosmetologist at the Ecole training center network, told Izvestia on September 17 how not to harm yourself and what to pay attention to when choosing cosmetics.

"Some components in cosmetics can cause dryness, irritation or other unpleasant skin reactions. Most often these are acids, retinol and zinc, they should be used with caution. When used correctly, they have a noticeable effect, but with excessive concentration or when applied without taking into account the characteristics of the skin, they often become a source of problems," she said.

The wrong combination of funds is also dangerous. For example, using several aggressive formulas at once — serum with acids and peeling — can damage the protective barrier of the skin, increase sensitivity and even provoke an exacerbation of chronic skin diseases.

The cosmetologist recalled the dangers of using cosmetics of unknown origin, which may be attractive in price, but most often hides serious risks to skin health. It is impossible to be sure of the composition of such products, the concentration of active substances, or the conditions of their production. They often add cheap substitutes for active ingredients that do not pass the necessary testing and safety checks for human skin.

Sometimes fakes may even contain prohibited and extremely harmful ingredients, such as heavy metals. The consequences of such cosmetics can be very different: from banal irritation and rashes to serious allergic reactions, burns or infections requiring medical intervention.

"To reduce risks, it is important to be able to recognize a fake. It is necessary to pay attention to the packaging first of all. Forgery is usually characterized by poor-quality printing, crooked seams, or lack of certification marks. In addition, it is necessary to check the shelf life and integrity of the protective film," Pospelova warned.

She also noted that authentic products always have instructions in Russian and a fully specified composition.

The specialist also reminded that owners of dry and sensitive skin should choose cosmetic procedures especially carefully. According to her, aggressive procedures, such as chemical peels, needle RF or laser resurfacing, are usually perceived very sharply by such skin. In this case, instead of the expected effect, they can cause redness, itching, and recovery will take much longer.

"To avoid negative consequences, women should focus not on fashion or advertising, but on the real needs of their skin. It is best to seek advice from a specialist who will choose the care taking into account individual characteristics," the cosmetologist concluded.

Dermatocosmetologist Ekaterina Konstantinovskaya told Izvestia on August 29 about why sunscreen is needed not only in the heat, how to read the icons on the packaging and what filters are available.
