Bloomberg has learned about Japan's refusal to increase duties on Russian oil
Japanese Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato rejected Washington's proposal to impose increased duties on Russian oil imports for China and India. This was reported by Bloomberg on September 16.
"Japan has made a commitment <...> treat all member countries fairly, as long as others comply with their obligations," the publication quotes the minister as saying.
According to him, such a measure contradicts the country's obligations under the World Trade Organization (WTO). In addition, Kato noted that "it would be difficult to raise duties to 50% just based on the fact that a particular country imports oil from Russia."
On September 16, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant announced that the Ukrainian conflict would allegedly end in a maximum of 90 days if European countries imposed secondary duties on countries that purchase Russian oil.
Prior to that, on September 13, American leader Donald Trump announced his readiness to impose sanctions against Russia only after all states abandon purchases of Russian oil.
