The doctor pointed out the serious consequences of chronic fatigue syndrome
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is not just a consequence of overwork or unwillingness to work, but a serious condition that can dramatically change a person's quality of life. Kirill Masliev, Candidate of Medical Sciences, member of the State Council Commission on Active and Long Life, Head of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Rudn University, founder of the Heroes Charitable Foundation, told Izvestia on September 17 how to recognize CFS and how it differs from ordinary overexertion.
"The main feature of CFS is the duration and persistence of symptoms. If after a rest, vacation, or even a long sleep, strength does not return, if weakness persists for weeks and months, if the slightest exertion causes a feeling of complete exhaustion, we may no longer be talking about overwork, but about chronic fatigue syndrome," said the specialist.
According to him, the symptoms of CFS also include headaches, insomnia or excessive drowsiness, muscle and joint pain, and digestive problems. An important marker is a decrease in cognitive functions: it is difficult for a person to concentrate, hold attention, and memorize information.
Masliev drew attention to the fact that the causes of chronic fatigue syndrome are complex.
"Stress, circadian rhythm disturbances, and emotional burnout come to the fore. But CFS is not only "psychology", it also has physiological foundations: a malfunction of the immune system, hormonal disorders, and sometimes the consequences of infections or medications. Therefore, it is very important not to identify the root cause of chronic fatigue syndrome," the doctor said.
As for treatment, Masliev noted that it is necessary to pay attention to the main aspects, such as adequate sleep on a stable schedule, moderate physical activity and a balanced diet, which are the basis of health. However, he also cautioned that in some cases this may not be enough. In such situations, the specialist recommended seeking medical help and, in addition to a therapist, consulting with a neurologist, endocrinologist and sometimes a psychotherapist.
"It is very important to understand that chronic fatigue is not a sign of laziness, weakness or "unwillingness to pull yourself together." This is the body's signal that its resources are depleted. And paying attention to this signal is the first step towards recovery," the expert concluded.
On June 3, certified life coach, expert in the field of emotional intelligence and self-development Alena Boryesson told how to deal with brain fatigue. According to her, when severe fatigue occurs, it is important to determine at a basic level what is happening inside, to evaluate it at a physiological level from 0 to 10. After that, it's worth taking a break — "let the system reboot."
