The young star of "Transitional Age" defeated Javier Bardam, the comedy about filming became the record holder for the number of awards, and violators of the regulations almost ruined the charity fundraiser. The 77th Emmy Television Awards Ceremony was held in Los Angeles. The distribution of prizes turned out to be largely unexpected, but the industry professionals were pleased. Izvestia gathered details about the winners and nominees, and discussed the results with renowned screenwriter Andrei Zolotarev.

Dollars in seconds

Traditionally, the organizers of such events want to make them interesting not only for industry representatives, but also for a wide television audience. And she loves shows, jokes, and dynamics. Hence the trick invented by the host of the ceremony, stand—up comedian Nate Bargatze. He promised to donate $100,000 to the Boys and Girls Club, a national organization in the United States, but added that he would deduct one thousand for every second that exceeded the allotted time for acceptance speeches. By the end of the first hour of the show, the total amount had dropped to 74 thousand, but in the end it was possible to raise $ 350 thousand — the saved seconds of the most concise winners and donations from participants helped.

However, there was plenty of intrigue in the distribution of prizes. The main trophy in the category "Best Drama Series" was taken by the medical drama "Pitt Hospital". The series follows the staff of the emergency department at a fictional trauma hospital in Pittsburgh. The plot centers on Dr. Michael "Robbie" Robinovich (Noah Wiley), who tries to balance work emergencies, internal conflicts, bureaucracy, and emotional burnout.

Wiley received a personal statuette in the Best Actor in a Drama Series category for his selfless work on the screen. Noah dedicated the award to the ambulance and emergency department staff.

In an interview with Izvestia, screenwriter Andrei Zolotarev noted that this year's winners correspond precisely to the audience's choice, and not to the sympathies of film critics.

— Pitt Hospital is a classic medical procedural about an emergency room. It's hard to come up with a more traditional serial story. It's a very American and English thing at the same time. We've seen a lot of hospital stories lately, but this one is especially high-quality. It's great that they won," said the screenwriter of "Words of a Kid", "Ice" and "Attraction".

The series had worthy competitors. Among them, the second season of the post-apocalyptic drama "Some of Us", based on the cult computer game of the same name, the sci-fi psychological thriller "Separation" about the nightmares of office workers who have come to life, and the winner of the Golden Globe-2023 "White Lotus".

An unexpected record was set by the comedy "Film Studio". The series collected 13 statuettes and became the most successful project in this genre in the first season. And director and lead actor Seth Rogen won three Emmys in one evening, including awards for best Acting, directing and screenwriting.

"I was very happy about the victory of the Film Studio," Andrei Zolotarev admitted. — In Russia, it is not customary to make films about movies or TV series about television, because it seems that these are very specialized, "inside-the-box", cabbage-shaped things. And no one will be interested in this. But the "Film Studio" broke the stereotype. They have made a story that is understandable to absolutely everyone, even those who make films in Russia. We also laugh at all the jokes they have on set, because it's exactly the same with us.

15 years is for victories

No less notable news is the triumph of 15-year-old Owen Cooper: he became the youngest actor in history to receive an Emmy Award. The young man was awarded for his work in the TV series "Transition age". In total, the intense Netflix drama about the case of a teenage boy accused of murder won eight Emmys, including Best Miniseries, Best Direction in a Miniseries, and Best Screenplay in a Miniseries.

In addition to the amazing acting, the camera solutions deserve special attention. Each of the four episodes was shot in one shot, without editing. The camera continuously follows the characters, never stopping moving for a second, creating the effect of total immersion.

— When you read the logline, it seems that this is a victory of form over content. But when you start watching, you realize that it's not about the form, but that it's just an incredibly cool story told, which the creators themselves complicated in a difficult way. Of course, even an adult actor would find it unbearable to work in such a form, and Owen Cooper is still a young actor. And in that sense, it's an absolutely well-deserved award. I am very happy for him," Zolotarev said.

Actor Tramell Tillman, who played Seth Milchik in "Separation," won the award for Best Supporting Actor, becoming the first black winner in the nomination. From the stage, he honored the memory of those who opened his way in the industry, and emphasized how important it is to show different angles of human experience on the screen. In total, the series took nine statuettes.

Jean Smart from "Cunning" again won an Emmy in the comedy actress category (last year, Smart took the statuette in a similar nomination and won an Oscar for "Tonya vs All"). And her co-star Hannah Einbinder was awarded in the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category.

Adam Randall won the nomination "Best Director of a Drama Series" for the project "Slow Horses". And Dan Gilroy won the Best Screenplay award for the drama series "Andor." The gangster hit "Penguin" from the DC universe won only one victory — Kristin Milioti won her first career Emmy for Best Actress in a miniseries.
