Olympic weightlifting champion Andrey Chemerkin, according to preliminary information, died due to a ruptured blood clot. This was announced on September 12 by his personal trainer Vladimir Kniga.

"Presumably, the cause of death was a blood clot. He has now been taken away for an autopsy, after which everything will become clear. I talked to his wife, and according to her, he was fine this morning, too, but then it got bad," he told TASS.

According to him, this is a huge loss for Russian sports. He added that the date of the funeral is still unknown.

Olympic weightlifting champion Chemerkin died at the age of 53. He won gold at the 1996 Olympics and bronze in 2000, and became world champion four times and held eight world records. In addition, in 1997 he was recognized as the best athlete in Russia and awarded the Order of Courage.
