MAMT presented plans for its 107th theatrical season

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Musical Theater (MAMT) has presented plans for its 107th theatrical season. At a press conference held on September 10, the management of the theater told about new productions, touring plans and educational initiatives.

The event was attended by the general director of the theater Andrey Borisov, the artistic director of the opera company, the chief director, People's Artist of Russia Alexander Titel, the artistic director of the ballet Maxim Sevagin and the chief conductor Felix Korobov.

"Our country is living at a turning point, and people are looking for shelter and peace of mind. They are in search of a place where they can be preserved and mentally cleansed. And we invite them to the theater. Now is a time when there is a personal reassembly not only of people, but also of institutions, the theater space, including our theater. They are looking for themselves, trying to give difficult answers to difficult challenges. Our search has a value basis. We have an artistic ideology and traditions laid down by the founding fathers of the musical theater, Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko," said Andrey Borisov, General Director of MAMT.

The opening of the season will be Maxim Sevagin's ballet "Queens of Variations" to the music of Ernst von Donanyi on September 11, 12 and 13. In November, the premiere of Tchaikovsky's opera The Maid of Orleans, staged by Alexander Titel and conducted by Christian Knapp, will take place. The premiere screenings are scheduled for November 28, 29 and 30. In March 2026, D.D. Shostakovich's opera "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District", also staged by Alexander Titel and conducted by Fyodor Lednev, will be presented on the Main Stage. Vladimir Arefyev will be the production designer for both opera premieres, and Damir Ismagilov will be the lighting designer. The premiere will take place on March 20, 21 and 22, 2026. The season will end with the ballet "Anna Karenina" to the music of Ilya Demutsky, choreographed by Maxim Sevagin, conducted by Timur Zangiev, playwright by Andrey Zolotarev, set designer by Vladimir Arefyev. Screenings are scheduled for June 25, 26, 27 and 28, 2026.

"In the autumn of 2026, it will be exactly one hundred years since our theater moved into this wonderful house at 17 Bolshaya Dmitrovka. By this date, we planned to prepare a number of performances, on the one hand, those that have never been staged in this theater, on the other hand, those that have a very important historical significance in the life of this at home, the team," Titel said.

Special attention in the new season is being paid to educational initiatives and support for young artists. From September 13 to 18, the MAMT Support Foundation will hold a competitive selection for a Youth internship program for vocalists, directors and concertmasters under the artistic direction of Titel. The uniqueness of this program lies in its focus on the author's director's theater.

In addition to the premieres, on September 19 and 20, 2025, the legendary ballet Sylphide, choreographed by Pierre Lacotte, returns to the repertoire. The season is also marked by a collaboration with the Kultura TV channel, thanks to which viewers across the country will see television versions of the plays "In Dark Images", "A Place in the Universe", "The Nutcracker" and "Class Concert".

"The new season supports the idea of a woman's image in history and culture. In the play "Queens of Variations" I wanted to present on stage the images of ballerinas from different eras. The prima ballerinas of our theater are the inspirers of this performance. <...> The premiere of "Anna Karenina" to the music of Ilya Demutsky is scheduled for the end of the season. However, we will not use the original score — I have reassembled and reworked the music, asking the composer to write new fragments in order to create a completely new score and original drama that corresponds to my vision of this work," said Sevagin.

The theater will continue its active touring activities, including a concert performance of the opera "Eugene Onegin" at the Federation Festival in Grozny on September 27, performances of "Madame Butterfly" and "The Tale of Tsar Saltan" at the Sirius Opera Days Festival in Sochi on November 14 and 16, as well as a concert program at the children's Theater Festival. "Snowfall" in Ozersk on November 30.

The educational project "MAMT CLUB", which has been successfully operating for four years, will continue to acquaint the audience with the backstage life of the theater through lectures, excursions and creative meetings. The project "Live Opera", implemented with the grant support of the Moscow Department of Culture, will also be implemented.
