Mikhail Murashko was born on January 9, 1967 in Sverdlovsk (since 1991 — Yekaterinburg). His father Albert Murashko is from Leningrad. During the years of the blockade, he and his parents were evacuated to the Urals, where he later got a job at the Sverdlovsk Turbo Engine Plant and started a family. Mother, Margarita Loginova, is a native of Sverdlovsk. Later, their only son was born there.
Education
The future minister studied at a local school with advanced studies in physics and mathematics, while simultaneously studying at a music school in the bayan class. After school, he entered the Sverdlovsk State Medical University. Now it is called Ural State Medical University (UGMU).
During his student years, Murashko continued to study music and even performed in the vocal and instrumental ensemble of the university. However, after the second year, he was drafted into the Armed Forces of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs, since most universities of that time did not provide deferrals from the army. He was able to continue his studies after the service. After receiving an education in the specialty "medical science", he entered an internship at the same university, choosing the direction "obstetrics and gynecology".
Scientific activity
In 1999, Murashko defended his PhD thesis on the topic "Features of the course and outcomes of childbirth in women with certain types of urogenital infection." He also worked on the development of a modern model of perinatal care in regions with low population density and in 2005 was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences.
In subsequent years, Murashko became a professor at Sechenov Moscow State Medical University and head of the Department of Research, Testing and Operation of Medical Equipment at Bauman Moscow State Technical University.
In addition to government and medical activities, Murashko was engaged in journalism. He founded the journal "Human Health in the North" and headed the editorial board of the journal "National Healthcare".
Early career
Mikhail Murashko began his professional career as an obstetrician-gynecologist at the Republican Hospital of the Komi Republic in Syktyvkar. His career was developing rapidly. In 1996, he was appointed Deputy Chief Physician for consultative and diagnostic work, and later Chief physician of the Republican Perinatal Center.
Significant practical experience and good managerial qualities allowed him to take up the post of Minister of Health of the Komi Republic in 2006. In this position, Murashko initiated the construction of many important medical infrastructure facilities, including the Republican Cancer Center.
Head of Roszdravnadzor
Subsequently, Murashko continued his civil service, taking up the position of deputy head of the Federal Service for Healthcare Supervision (Roszdravnadzor). Since 2013, he has been the interim head, and in the period from 2015 to 2020, he officially headed the department.
Murashko continued the fight against counterfeit medicines and introduced a system of inspection visits to check the storage conditions of goods in pharmacies. Numerous inspections of hospitals and polyclinics were also carried out.
In addition, the requirements for the work of plastic surgeons and the equipment of their offices have been revised. As a result, over 250 medical institutions surrendered their licenses and about 100 more were on the verge of closure because they could not fully ensure patient safety.
Minister of Health
In early 2020, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree appointing Murashko Minister of Health of Russia. He replaced Veronika Skvortsova, who headed the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA). In May 2024, Murashko was re-approved as the head of the Ministry of Health, joining the new government of the Russian Federation.
In the first months after the appointment, the Russian healthcare system faced a serious challenge — the coronavirus epidemic began. The main resources were devoted to fighting the new infection and developing vaccines.
During this period, allowances were introduced for polyclinic medical staff, ambulance drivers, and doctors who treated patients with COVID-19. There has also been an adjustment to the system of payment for medical care under compulsory medical insurance.
Among the main tasks set for the Ministry of Health in the coming years are to expand the coverage of the population with occupational examinations and medical examinations, develop domestic production of the most in—demand medicines, medical equipment and consumables, and increase the life expectancy of Russians to 78 years.
The achievement of these goals will take place within the framework of the national project "Long and active life", the implementation of which began on January 1, 2025 and is designed until 2030.
