Currently, Kazakhstan is among the top 3 most popular destinations for traveling abroad among Russians, so tourism is one of the drivers of socio-economic development for the two countries. This was announced on September 10 during a working meeting between Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, and Olzhas Bektenov, Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

"In the first half of 2025, the tourist flow from Kazakhstan to Russia amounted to more than 1.03 million trips, from Russia to Kazakhstan — over 1.23 million trips," Chernyshenko said.

In 2024, the tourist flow from Kazakhstan to Russia amounted to more than 2.2 million trips, in the opposite direction — 2.6 million. Bektenov stressed that there are large reserves for the development of tourism, and in this regard, Kazakhstan aims to increase cooperation with Russia in all areas.

The meeting participants stressed that thanks to the trusting dialogue and constant contacts between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Kazakh counterpart Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, stable economic, cultural and humanitarian ties have been formed between the two countries. At the same time, bilateral relations are developing in line with strategic partnership and alliance. The mutual trade turnover between the states in January-June 2025 amounted to $12 billion.

"Trade volumes are significant: Russia ranks second among Kazakhstan's trading partners after China: the share in foreign trade is 19.7%," Chernyshenko added.

He noted that the Russian Federation is satisfied with cooperation with Kazakhstan within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and welcomes its accession to the BRICS partnership format. The meeting also discussed issues of bilateral cooperation between Russia and Kazakhstan in the field of digitalization and innovation, sports, tourism and education.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reported on August 31 that Putin spoke with Tokayev during a reception for guests of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China. He noted that the leaders of the two countries sat together at the table and had the opportunity to communicate.

In July, Izvestia was informed by the Ministry of Economic Development that the cost of travel to friendly countries may decrease in Russia. The reason for the favorable forecast is the new law on benefits for tour operators, which entered into force on September 1. According to the Russian Union of Travel Industry (PCT), Abkhazia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and the DPRK may be included in the list. Thanks to this measure, these countries will receive an additional tourist flow. They noted that the demand for these countries increased by 10-12% in six months compared to the same period last year.
