On September 6, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova spoke on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum about her grandfather, who took part in the battles on Lake Hassan.

"My two grandfathers went through World War II and the Great Patriotic War, and we realized that they might have crossed paths without knowing each other.<...> But one of my grandfathers, Vladislav Grigoryevich Machulko, participated in the events on Lake Hassan," she said in an interview with TASS.

The diplomat admitted that she herself could not discuss this with her grandfather, because she was a schoolgirl, and the family returned from a business trip just two months before his death. Zakharova added that she could make up for this "vital omission" only by working with documents.

According to her, the man also took part in the construction of fortified areas in the Far East. The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry explained that it was very symbolic for her.

On September 4, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry called on the European Union (EU) countries to stop "canceling" the story. According to the diplomat, it would be useful for European countries to recognize history and stop lying, and countries wishing to implement the "Napoleonic plans" should remember how they ended.
