Pulmonologist Vyacheslav Ovechkin told which category of people is most at risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

In conversation with aif.ru On Friday, September 5, Ovechkin noted that smokers are primarily susceptible to COPD, regardless of seniority. According to him, if a person smokes a pack a day for ten years or half of this dose, the risk of the disease is already there. The risk group also includes those who are constantly near smokers and inhale tobacco smoke.

The doctor added that the danger also threatens people living in areas with high levels of air pollution, as well as those who work in industries with unfavorable conditions, safety violations and the presence of harmful substances, especially dust.

According to the specialist, COPD is incurable, so it is important to identify the disease at an early stage. At the first stage, preventive measures can stop the progress of the disease and preserve the quality of life.

He stressed that if you go to the doctor late, the process can only be slowed down, but not stopped. In severe cases, at the fourth stage, the patient constantly needs oxygen support — with the help of cylinders or concentrators, and the person actually becomes housebound.

On September 4, pulmonologist Alexander Karabinenko called the constant cough a warning of potential diseases. According to him, COPD is among the most common diseases in smokers, writes 360.ru . The specialist advised to undergo regular examinations, the website reports kp.ru .

On September 3, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chief Pulmonologist of the Ministry of Health Sergey Avdeev called on Russians to massively check for COPD. He noted that a simple study would help detect COPD "two to four times more often."

Earlier, oncologist Anastasia Marienko, in an interview with RT, warned that vapes can contribute to the development of cancer. According to her, tobacco smoke is rich in free radicals, which disrupt the protective balance in the body, cause inflammation and damage lung cells. This can lead to COPD and lung cancer, the expert noted, adding that the risk also applies to electronic devices.
