The Pervomaisky District Court of Penza sentenced Alexey Merkushkin, the son of the former head of Mordovia and the Samara region, to seven years in a high-security penal colony for fraud, large-scale bribery and abuse of office. This was reported on September 5 by a correspondent of Izvestia.

Merkushkin will also have to pay a fine of 152 million 360 thousand rubles, and the court decided to recover another 43 million rubles from him in favor of the Development Corporation of the Republic of Mordovia. His property was seized.

In 2015, Merkushkin paid a bribe of more than 7 million rubles to Alexander Terenkin, the manager of the National Bank of the Republic of Mordovia in the Volga-Vyatka Main Directorate of the Central Bank. In response, he had to withdraw the results of the inspection, which threatened to revoke the license of Mordovpromstroybank.
