In Transbaikalia, customs officers found 13 claws of a brown bear in a foreign tourist. He was crossing the Russian border through the Zabaikalsk checkpoint and was planning a trip to Manchuria.

During the inspection, the tourist was found to have animal parts. He claimed that he had bought them in Irkutsk from a stranger, but had not issued any export documents or customs declaration, writes ChitaMedia news agency with reference to the Chita customs website.

The examination confirmed that the claws belong to a brown bear. This animal is endangered and protected by the international Convention of CITES. Thus, for the export of such derivatives from the country, permission from the Rosselkhoznadzor and Rosprirodnadzor is required, as well as a passenger customs declaration.

Two administrative cases have been initiated against the foreigner. He may be ordered to pay a fine in the amount of twice the value of the seized items.

Earlier it was reported that the border department of the Federal Security Service of Russia in Primorsky Krai seized Amur tiger skin, bear paws and more than 2 thousand dried trepangs from a poacher with foreign citizenship. The damage to natural resources exceeded 3 million rubles. Illegal trafficking of wild animal derivatives, including those listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation, has been stopped.
