Minister Chekunkov called the Russian Northern Fleet a world leader and the country's shield

Alexey Chekunkov, Minister for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, said that the Northern Fleet is a world leader and Russia's shield in the Arctic. He stated this on September 5 at the session "The Arctic: Information Policy" on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum — 2025 (WEF-2025).

"And, of course, the presence of various security forces in the Arctic determines this very geostrategic security. In this regard, we are also a world leader, and, of course, our Red Banner Order of Ushakov, the Northern Fleet, is both a reliable shield and, if necessary, a sword in terms of protecting our interests in the North," Chekunov explained.

He also stressed the importance of the Arctic as an economic and geopolitical region.

"In recent years, a lot of attention, the geopolitical attention of the whole world, has actually been focused on the Arctic, primarily because of the prospects for economic development and the development of Arctic resources... They are literally important, system—forming not only for our country, but also for the global economy," the Minister for the Development of the Far East added.
