Sergey Lavrov was born on March 21, 1950 in Moscow. His father was Armenian by nationality, and his mother was Russian. As a child, Lavrov survived his parents' divorce and stayed with his mother. He spent his early years in the Noginsky district of the Moscow region, where he lived with his grandparents. That time left him with fond memories. He studied first at a local school, and then at Moscow school No. 607 with advanced English studies, graduating with a silver medal.

Studying at MGIMO

After school, Lavrov entered the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), where he chose the Eastern department of the Faculty of International Relations. During his student years, he actively participated in the life of the institute, was a member of construction teams and showed creative abilities, composing poems and songs. At MGIMO, Lavrov became famous as the author of the institute's anthem. He also mastered French and Sinhalese, which later influenced his career.

Early career

After graduating from MGIMO in 1972, Sergey Lavrov began his diplomatic career at the USSR Embassy in Sri Lanka. At first, he worked as a translator and assistant to the ambassador. A few years later, he returned to Moscow, where he continued his career at the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs, holding positions related to international organizations. By the end of the 1980s, he became Deputy Head of the Department of International Economic Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and then director of the Department of International Organizations and Global Issues.

Work at the UN

In 1981, Sergey Lavrov was appointed to the Permanent Mission of the USSR to the United Nations in New York. For several years, he worked at the UN headquarters, starting as First Secretary and ending as a senior adviser. In 1994, Lavrov returned to the UN, now as Russia's representative, and remained in that role until 2004. In the course of his work, he became known for his determination and integrity. He actively participated in negotiations on key international issues, including the peaceful resolution of the crisis in the Middle East and the preparation of the Iran nuclear deal. Lavrov also became the author of many vivid statements that were quoted and attracted the attention of the world community.

In the spring of 2004, Lavrov was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, replacing Igor Ivanov. Over the years, he has strengthened Russia's position in the international arena, actively defending the country's interests in the UN Security Council and other international organizations. Lavrov played a key role in the diplomatic resolution of the Ukrainian crisis, taking a tough but constructive position in the negotiations. He was repeatedly re-elected to the post of minister, which proved his high professionalism and the trust of the President and the government of Russia.

Awards and titles

Sergey Lavrov has received numerous awards and titles, both Russian and international. In 2004, he was awarded the title of Honored Worker of the Diplomatic Service of the Russian Federation. In 2020, he was awarded the title Hero of Labor of the Russian Federation, and in March 2025, he received the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle. Lavrov is also a full recipient of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland and has received numerous foreign awards.

Personal life

Sergey Lavrov is married to philologist Maria Lavrova, who worked in the library of the Permanent Mission of Russia to the United Nations. In 1982, their daughter Ekaterina was born. She graduated from Columbia University in New York and completed her Master's degree in London. Ekaterina works in the field of contemporary art. In 2008, she married businessman Alexander Vinokurov, and the Lavrov family had a grandson and a granddaughter.
