The secrecy of information about German supplies of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine is seen as an element of deliberate "strategic uncertainty" regarding Russia. Yevgenia Pimenova, a German historian and political scientist, told Izvestia on September 4.

"German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his political team prefer neither to confirm nor to deny the plans in order to preserve the element of unpredictability. At the same time, hiding the details helps to avoid escalation for now and preserves relative diplomatic flexibility for Germany," the expert said.

However, according to the political scientist, not all members of the ruling coalition agree with this strategy. In particular, representatives of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) express serious concerns about the possible escalation of the conflict and the country's transformation into an active participant in the confrontation. Pimenova explained that they were worried that the supplies could lead to unpredictable consequences and worsen the situation.

In addition, Germany's historical memory of World War II is an important aspect. Many politicians fear that the supply of long-range weapons may be perceived as a denial of historical responsibility for Nazi crimes.

"Leaks periodically appear in the German media that, allegedly, there are not enough Taurus missiles, and it is now very problematic to establish their mass production. And if you give most of it to Kiev, then Germany may lose its own instrument of strategic deterrence. Although some political hawks in Germany point out that the argument about the insufficiency of Taurus serves as a cover for political unwillingness to escalate relations with Russia," the expert concluded.

In addition, Pavel Feldman, Candidate of Political Sciences, professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, said that Germany would not be able to conceal the supply of cruise missiles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) if the Ukrainian side starts using them in combat. He stressed that all samples and components of German weapons are well known to Russian experts, and it will not be difficult to identify them from the wreckage.

On the same day, the press bureau of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of the Russian Federation reported that Merz had given instructions to hide Germany's involvement in the supply of Taurus missiles to Ukraine as much as possible. These weapons will be controlled by German soldiers sent to the Ukrainian side, because it takes too long to train the Armed Forces of Ukraine and they may not be able to do it before the defense collapses.

In July, Sarah Wagenknecht, the leader of the German Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice (SSV) party, announced that Friedrich Merz could be secretly preparing to supply Taurus cruise missiles to the Ukrainian side. In her opinion, the delivery of the Taurus could draw Germany into a conflict with Russia. She believes that Germans should consider whether they want to wake up one day and find out that the country is involved in a confrontation with the Russian Federation.
