Alexey Kupriyanov, head of the Center for the Indian Ocean Region of the Russian Academy of Sciences, believes that US President Donald Trump is criticizing India for importing Russian oil in order to impose new tariffs.

"The American leader does not specifically need a halt in supplies, but a strong negotiating position that allows him to put pressure on India to open its market to American goods. If India is ready to make concessions in the negotiations, Trump may use the possible settlement of the Ukrainian crisis in a similar way as an excuse to reduce duties," the expert believes.

According to him, given the strong ties between Russia and India, which are also united by close cooperation through the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and BRICS, Washington is unlikely to force New Delhi to ban oil supplies from Russia.

"However, the American authorities may encourage India to significantly reduce the volume of purchases. This, in turn, will slow down the growth rate of India's refining sector and inflate domestic gasoline prices," the indologist is convinced.

On September 2, Trump announced that he was not going to reduce import duties of 50% imposed on India. Restrictions on India were imposed, among other things, for the purchase of Russian oil.

On August 26, Reuters reported that trade duties of 50%, which were previously announced by Trump, have already begun to apply to India. It was noted that the tariffs affected goods, which included precious stones, jewelry, shoes, sports equipment, as well as furniture and chemicals.

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said that the United States and the European Union accuse India of buying Russian oil, but at the same time they continue to buy fossil fuels from New Delhi.
