Pushkin Museum presents "Madonna and Child" by Guercino
The 17th-century painting "Madonna and Child" by the Italian artist Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, better known as Guercino, was presented at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. The work, which was considered lost for almost 100 years, can be seen again in the museum space. This was announced on September 2 in the Telegram channel of the cultural institution.
"The Pushkin Museum presents the fifth and final part of the Pushkin's New Masterpieces project, dedicated to recently acquired works. The painting "Madonna and Child" by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, nicknamed Guercino, was considered lost for a long time. For the first time in almost 100 years, the work is returning to the museum space as part of the project," the message says.
The painting, which belongs to the mature period of Guercino's work, reflects the characteristic features of that time — a typical image of the Madonna with a slight tilt of the head and soft shadows. The artist's skill is clearly manifested in the arrangement of the folds of clothing, "filling the picture with the movement of inner life."
Guercino's works were highly appreciated by the Spanish painter Diego Velasquez. He considered him one of the greatest colorists. Alexander Benois considered Guercino's paintings to be among the most outstanding Russian artists.
It is specified that the work of the Italian artist will be available to the public until September 14 in the Main building of the museum.
The newspaper Het Parool, citing the Dutch Cultural Heritage Agency, reported on August 26 that a painting by Italian artist Vittore Giuseppe Ghislandi, which was stolen by the Nazis during World War II, had been found in Argentina. Research by critics and the Rotterdam newspaper Algemeen Dagblad confirms the identification of the canvas. Jacques Goudsticker's heirs plan to claim the painting.
