Valentin Rodionov, the former director of the Tretyakov Gallery, has died at the age of 88. This was reported by the Russian Academy of Arts (RAH).

"The Russian Academy of Arts and the entire Russian culture have suffered a heavy loss. On September 1, 2025, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Valentin Alekseevich Rodionov passed away," reads the publication in the Telegram channel for September 1.

Valentin Rodionov was born in 1937 in Moscow. In 1960, he graduated from the Moscow State Architectural Institute, and for some time worked in design organizations. The peak of his urban planning career was the position of deputy head of the main architectural and planning department of the Moscow City Executive Committee. In 1989, he served as Deputy Minister of Culture of the RSFSR for Capital Construction.

Rodionov was appointed General Director of the All-Russian Museum Association "State Tretyakov Gallery" in 1993. Under his leadership, the reconstruction and restoration of the complex of knowledge and the house church museum of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachi, was carried out.

Among other things, with his participation, multi-volume catalogues of the complete collection of the Tretyakov Gallery, the most significant exhibitions, guidebooks and albums about artists were produced annually.
