Financial sector specialists had their own holiday in 2011 by decree of the President of Russia. The date for it was not chosen by chance — on September 8 (old style), 1802, Emperor Alexander I established the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Empire. The main task of the department was to ensure financial order and increase the wealth of the country.
The Ministry of Finance is one of the oldest government agencies in the Russian Federation — it will be 223 years old in 2025. It has gone through many changes, reforms and personnel changes.
One of the most significant events in the history of Russia's financial policy was the monetary reform carried out at the end of the 19th century by Finance Minister Sergei Witte. He introduced the "gold standard," which strengthened the ruble and made it a stable global currency.
After the October Revolution of 1917, the People's Commissariat of Finance (Narkomfin) was established, which began to implement a unified financial policy in the country. In 1946, the People's Commissariat of Finance was transformed into the Ministry of Finance of the USSR.
After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Russia was established, which became the successor to two Soviet departments. But already in February 1992, it was divided into two structures — the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Economy.
Today, the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation is engaged in the legal regulation of monetary, budgetary, insurance, currency and banking activities, the securities market, accounting, and is also responsible for the preparation of the federal budget, customs and tariff regulation and other important financial issues.
Traditions of Financier's Day in Russia
