Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych agreed with the words of Russian leader Vladimir Putin that Ukraine's involvement in NATO has become one of the main causes of the Ukrainian conflict. He announced this in a video message to journalists on September 1.

This is how he commented on the words of the Russian leader during a speech at a meeting of the leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) about the actions of the West aimed at the entry of the Ukrainian side into the membership of the union.

"Yes, Vladimir Vladimirovich is absolutely right. <… > I have always been a staunch opponent of Ukraine's accession to NATO. I have always clearly understood that this is a disaster for Ukraine. This is the way to nowhere. This is a direct path to civil war," the ex-president noted.

Also, according to Yanukovych, as president, he purposefully worked to bring Ukraine closer to the European Union (EU), but the EU partners behaved incorrectly during the negotiations, and also did not take into account the current political situation in the country.
