- The economist pointed to India's benefits in purchasing Russian oil, even with US duties.
Despite the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, it is still profitable for India to purchase Russian oil. On September 1, Alexander Safonov, Doctor of Economics, Professor at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, shared this conviction with Izvestia.
"Indian refineries have long been associated with the purchase of Russian oil, they are focused on its quality, and changing technology is also a cost. The second point is that Russia has always provided supplies stably and at previously agreed prices, which is also beneficial in an ever—changing market environment," Safonov explained.
He added that the Russian side provides discounts to countries with which long-term agreements on the purchase of raw materials have been concluded. In addition, the professor noted that we are talking about cooperation within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
"This is strengthening the economic independence of the SCO countries from Western partners in order to prevent further pressure on the economy in the form of such duties," the economist said.
Speaking about the possibility of pressure on India from EU countries, Safonov stressed that Europe is already suffering from sanctions imposed against Russia. In the event of an increase in duties on India following the United States, the European Union (EU) countries will receive an increase in the cost of manufactured goods and a further drop in the standard of living of the population.
On August 26, Reuters reported that trade duties of 50%, which were previously announced by Trump, have already begun to apply to India. It clarifies that the tariffs affected goods, which included precious stones, jewelry, shoes, sporting goods, as well as furniture and chemicals.
Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said on August 23 that the United States and the European Union (EU) countries, despite their accusations against India, continue to buy oil from it. He advised these states, if they have problems purchasing fossil fuels from India, not to purchase it anymore.
On September 1, the Axios portal reported that the United States called on European countries to impose sanctions on India similar to the American ones, including a complete cessation of oil and gas supplies.
