Contrary to popular belief and outward harmlessness, sleeping with a phone hidden under a pillow carries potential risks. This was announced on September 1 by Gleb Derevlev, senior lecturer at the Department of Practical and Applied Informatics at RTU MIREA.

"Smartphones emit heat when operating and charging. Under the pillow, the heat sink is disrupted, which leads to increased heating of the device. This is not useful for the device as a whole and is critical for the battery, which is a potential source of ignition. As a result, there is an increased risk of the device igniting due to overheating and short circuit, especially if the device is charging at that moment. The risks are compounded when using low—quality chargers and cables," he explained in an interview with Gazeta.Ru».

If the battery is running in an abnormal mode for a long time, there is a risk that the battery may swell — this will lead to a complete malfunction of the device, the article emphasized.

The expert warned that in addition to the danger of overheating and fire, there is another threat: the glue used in modern smartphones softens when heated, which can lead to peeling of the screen or internal components.

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies radio frequency fields from mobile devices as potential carcinogens. Although a direct causal relationship with cancer has not been established, prolonged exposure to electromagnetic radiation in the head area, according to theoretical assumptions, can negatively affect cellular functions and the ability of tissues to regulate temperature, the material noted.

"It is recommended to put the phone into airplane mode at night or disable wireless modules — mobile communication, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and geolocation. Disabling these functions at night reduces the load on the battery and reduces the risk of overheating," advised Derevlev.

To improve sleep and wake up, it is recommended to keep your smartphone on a hard surface at least one meter away from your head. If it serves as an alarm clock, then you should set it so that you need to get up to turn it off. The expert emphasized that this reduces the nighttime impact of the device and promotes a more comfortable awakening. He also advised to avoid using a smartphone in bed, especially when charging, and to observe digital hygiene, that is, stop using the gadget half an hour or an hour before bedtime, turn off notifications and monitor the battery status.

In an interview with Izvestia, Boris Lopatin, MegaFon's senior expert on fraud investigation, warned on August 24 about the risks of using shared Wi-Fi. According to him, the transfer of home Internet to external users who are not family members, or even to commercial organizations, is a time bomb.
