- Axios has learned about Israel's active discussion of the annexation of part of the West Bank
The Israeli Government is seriously discussing annexing parts of the West Bank in response to the possible recognition of Palestine by several Western countries. The Axios portal writes about this on August 31, citing three Israeli, American and European officials.
According to media reports, most of the international community views the West Bank as Israeli-occupied territory and will consider any Israeli annexations "illegal and provocative."
As stated in the publication, Israel's further actions will depend on the position of US President Donald Trump, who has already twice blocked such annexations in his first term.
"Some Israeli officials claim that the Trump administration will not oppose the annexation," writes Axios.
At the same time, it is noted that American officials consider this unlikely.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said on August 20 that the United Kingdom opposes Israel's approval of the E1 settlement plan, which involves the construction of settlements of about 12 square kilometers between the eastern part of Jerusalem and the city of El-Ezaria on the West Bank of the Jordan River. Lammy noted that if implemented, the Palestinian State would split in two, which would be a blatant violation of international law. The minister added that the Israeli Government should reverse this decision.
At the same time, Israel approved an operation to capture the city of Gaza called "Gideon's Chariots – 2." It was noted that the mobilization of the military reserve in Israel will begin soon.
Earlier in August, Australia, Canada, France and the United Kingdom announced their intention to recognize the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly (GA) at the end of September 2025.
