The media learned about Brazil's plans to hold an extraordinary BRICS summit
The Brazilian authorities are preparing an extraordinary summit of the BRICS member countries in response to the challenges of the United States – negotiations can take place in the format of a videoconference. This was reported on August 29 by the newspaper Valor Economico (VE), citing informed sources.
"The Government of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (President of Brazil. - Ed.) promotes a new meeting of the group on an extraordinary and virtual basis," the article says.
It is specified that Lula da Silva plans to discuss with the heads of 11 countries of the bloc the actions of the United States that can influence the development of the multilateral world. Celso Amorim, the special adviser to the Brazilian leader and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the country, is responsible for organizing the meeting. On the eve of this statement, he managed to talk with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
In addition, Amorim may hold a number of bilateral meetings on the issue initiated by the Brazilian president next week. He, among other politicians, will arrive in China for events marking the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the People's Democratic Republic of China (PRC) over militaristic Japan in World War II.
On July 9, US President Donald Trump imposed trade duties of 50% on goods from Brazil. Lula da Silva criticized the decision on August 1, calling it unfair and noting that Brazil would not jeopardize its national institutions.
On August 29, Globo newspaper announced the Brazilian government's intention to take retaliatory measures against the United States — it will take about seven months to complete this process, which has already begun discussions in the country. It is assumed that the Brazilian side will also hold a number of "formal consultations" with Washington on this issue.
