Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with the Chinese Xinhua news agency on August 30 that sports should be protected from politicization as much as possible.

"Good results in sports cooperation. We thank our Chinese partners for their active participation in international Russian sports projects. <...> We believe that sport should be protected as much as possible from politicization," Putin is quoted as saying on the Kremlin's website.
