Zakharova named a condition for providing security guarantees to Ukraine
The provision of security guarantees to Ukraine should not be a condition, but the result of a peaceful settlement of the conflict. This was announced on August 29 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"It must be understood that providing security guarantees is not a condition, but the result of a peaceful settlement based on eliminating the root causes of the crisis in Ukraine, which in turn will guarantee the security of our country," Zakharova said at a briefing.
According to her, security guarantees should include demilitarization, denazification, as well as the nitrile, non-aligned and nuclear-weapon-free status of Ukraine.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on August 22 that Europe must take a leading role in ensuring security for Ukraine after the end of the conflict. According to him, the United States will take part in security guarantees for Kiev, but the administration of the American leader Donald Trump believes that Europe should take the initiative.
On August 24, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that in order to reach an agreement on guarantees of Ukraine's security after the conflict ends, Western countries must take into account Russia's basic interests.
