On the occasion of the International Day against Nuclear Testing on August 29, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said that the nuclear powers should strengthen cooperation, undertake efforts towards nuclear disarmament and non-nuclear testing.

The leader of Kazakhstan recalled that the inhabitants of his country had become victims of the effects of atomic weapons tests. He added that such a tragedy should not happen again.

"For the sake of future generations, we must strengthen peace, develop international cooperation, and make efforts towards nuclear disarmament and non—nuclear testing," he wrote on his page on the social network X (former. Twitter).

Tokayev also added that peace and security are currently the highest values that unite all of humanity.

Nuclear disarmament expert Mark Medish said on August 26 that leaders should focus on national security issues and explain to the public why they are involved in nuclear security. In his opinion, the media do not pay enough attention to international arms control negotiations.

On August 25, US President Donald Trump announced a discussion on the topic of reducing nuclear weapons with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting in Alaska. Then he expressed his intention to involve China in this issue.
