The Russian Permanent Mission called the restoration of UN sanctions against Iran a step towards escalation.

The initiative of the Eurotroika (Great Britain, Germany and France) to resume sanctions against Iran should have no legal effect and is a step towards escalation. This was announced on August 28 by Dmitry Polyansky, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations.

"This step by European countries, in our opinion, has absolutely no legal force. <...> This is just an escalatory step. This clearly shows that Western countries do not understand what diplomacy is," he told reporters.

Polyansky stressed that the decision of the Eurotroika to resume sanctions would complicate international cooperation in the field of Iran's nuclear program.

"This is for us (the decision to resume sanctions. It's disappointing because we expected to deal with serious partners, but in the end it looks like we're dealing with a gang of gangsters," Polyansky added.

Earlier in the day, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that the Eurotroika countries had notified the Islamic Republic of the launch of a 30-day process to restore UN sanctions against Tehran in connection with its nuclear program. He added that Iran will respond appropriately to the decision of the European countries.

At the same time, the Axios portal reported that the foreign ministers of Germany, Britain and France informed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that they would restore all sanctions against Iran. It was noted that by their actions, European countries want to increase economic pressure on Tehran.

On August 26, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi announced that the Islamic Republic and the Eurotroika countries had held another round of negotiations on the nuclear issue in Geneva. He added that Tehran continues to insist on finding a mutually beneficial diplomatic solution. Gharibabadi also noted that it is time for European countries to make the right decision and resolve the nuclear issue with Iran through diplomacy.
