Doctor of Physico-Mathematical Sciences Nikolai Kuznetsov died at the age of 79.
Nikolai Kuznetsov, Doctor of Physico-Mathematical Sciences, Chief Researcher at the St. Petersburg Institute of Problems of Machine Science (IPMash) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, died at the age of 79. This was announced on August 28 by the press service of the educational institution.
"It is with deep sorrow that we inform you that Nikolai Germanovich Kuznetsov, an outstanding scientist, Doctor of Physico-mathematical Sciences, chief researcher at IPMash RAS, died on August 27 at the age of 80," reads a statement posted on the official website.
The cause of death is not specified. Since 1986, Kuznetsov has taught at IPMash RAS, where he rose from senior researcher to head of the laboratories "Mathematical Models of Mechanics" and "Mathematical Modeling of wave Processes", and later became chief researcher.
According to the educational institution, the Doctor of Sciences was a prominent representative of the Leningrad Mathematical School. Kuznetsov's results concerning the theory of stationary and nonstationary waves, as well as problems on the interaction of waves with bodies and liquid fluctuations in containers, influenced the development of these areas.
In addition, he has written more than 100 scientific papers and several books. One of his most famous works is the monograph "Linear Water Waves: A Mathematical Approach". Kuznetsov was also a sought-after lecturer and visiting researcher at European universities.
