The European Union (EU) continues to discuss the possibility of introducing secondary tariffs and sanctions against Russia's partner countries, but it is necessary to take into account the existing split among the states of the Global South. Malek Dudakov, an American political scientist, told Izvestia on August 28.

"You need to understand that many of these countries, the countries of the Global South, are currently conducting their own separate trade negotiations with the European Union. Destroying your parallel trading track would probably not be entirely logical. Not so long ago, the European Union concluded a major trade deal with Mercosur and Latin American countries, and now they are also intensifying negotiations with India," the source said.

The expert drew attention to the fact that economic indicators are deteriorating. According to him, economic growth is at around zero, and real incomes of the population are comparable to those of the late 2000s and early 2010s. Dudakov added that the introduction of secondary sanctions could negatively affect the interests of European businesses, which are already protesting against this step.

"No one will impose any large-scale tariffs or sanctions on China and India, but they will select a small number of companies and individuals who will be subject to personal sanctions," Dudakov said.

On August 27, Bloomberg, citing its sources, reported that EU countries were considering the possibility of imposing secondary sanctions as part of restrictions against Russia. Additional restrictions on the export and import of Russian goods are also planned.

On August 19, the head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, said that the next, 19th package of EU sanctions against Russia should be ready by next month. She added that Europe will continue to influence the Russian economy.
