Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen apologized to the residents of Greenland for forced contraception in the 1960s. The corresponding statement was published on the website of the Office of the Head of the Cabinet of Ministers of Denmark on August 27.

In Greenland, the Spiral contraception program was in operation in the 1960s. These measures were taken to control the birth rate on the island. As part of the program, the girls had intrauterine devices installed without their knowledge after giving birth.

"On behalf of Denmark, I would like to say: I'm sorry. Sorry, girls and women who have been systematically discriminated against. Due to the fact that they are Greenlanders," the text of the statement says.

Frederiksen added that the Danish government cannot undo the events of the past, but is ready to take responsibility for what happened. She also noted that she expects to receive the results of the investigation of the case as soon as possible.

In the 1960s, a forced contraception campaign was conducted in Greenland, during which underage girls and women in labor were fitted with intrauterine devices, often without their consent. More than 140 Greenlandic women have filed lawsuits against the Danish government, demanding compensation in the total amount of more than 500 million rubles for their experiences.
