Istanbul police have seized $30 million worth of jewelry and antiques during a raid on a local Grand Bazaar during an investigation into diamond smuggling. This was announced on August 27 by ABC TV channel.

"The operation was launched after 10 suspects of smuggling precious stones to Turkey were initially detained," the article says.

According to the TV channel, the police raided 23 retail outlets in the 15th century indoor market and arrested 40 more people.

The police confiscated about 135 pieces of jewelry, 1,132 bars of precious metals and 267 historical artifacts worth $30.5 million. Firearms and digital materials were also seized.

According to ABC, the Grand Bazaar is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Turkey, where thousands of small shops are located. It was founded by Sultan Mehmed II shortly after he conquered the city from the Byzantine Empire.

Earlier, on June 9, La Repubblica newspaper reported that the Italian police had uncovered a theft at a gold smelter. It was clarified that an employee of the company took out the precious metal, hiding it in his hair. According to the newspaper, in a year he managed to hide and then "attach" almost two kilograms of gold, taking home at least 150 thousand euros.
