- Submarines of the Russian Federation and China conducted joint patrols in the Pacific Ocean for the first time.
Submarines of the Russian Navy and the Navy of the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA) conducted the first joint underwater patrol in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. This was announced on August 27 by the press service of the Pacific Fleet.
The diesel-electric submarine Volkhov of the Pacific Fleet and a submarine of the PLA Navy took part in the raid. Together, they embarked on an agreed route in the Japan and East China Seas.
After completing the assigned tasks, the submarines set off back to their bases. The crew of the Volkhov returned to the Pacific Fleet base in Vladivostok on Wednesday. During the cruise, the submarine traveled more than 2,000 nautical miles. The patrol was provided by the corvette "Loud" and the rescue tugboat "Photius Krylov" of the Pacific Fleet.
"The main tasks of the joint patrol are to strengthen naval cooperation between Russia and China, maintain peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, monitor the marine area and protect objects of maritime economic activity of the Russian Federation and China. Also, Russian and Chinese military sailors traditionally work out issues of maneuvering and interaction during joint training," the message says.
The underwater patrol started in early August after the Russian-Chinese exercises "Maritime Interaction — 2025" ended in the waters of the Sea of Japan. The crews replenished supplies from the support vessels and entered the designated area. Joint patrols are carried out within the framework of international military cooperation between the Russian Federation and China, said Rear Admiral Reserve Mikhail Chekmasov.
The first joint surface patrol of the Russian Federation and China in the Asia-Pacific region took place in 2021 and has been conducted annually since then.
