- The political scientist pointed to Serbia's attempts to prevent the "frenzied unification" of the European Union.
The incitement of anti-government actions in Serbia is connected with the desire of the European Union (EU) to integrate the state into the "marching ranks" of all willing European countries. Vladimir Zharikhin, a political scientist and deputy director of the CIS Institute, shared this opinion with Izvestia on August 27.
"Yugoslavia was defeated, but Serbia remained. Serbia, which still has elements of an independent policy, a foreign policy. And at a time when this "frenzied unification" is taking place in the European Union, <...> every effort is being made to align it with everyone in Europe," he explained.
Zharikhin stressed that the protests in the state are clearly initiated from the outside. He noted that Serbia is largely integrated into the European market, and it is difficult for the authorities to plan their actions without imposing economic restrictions on the country.
In his opinion, this factor limits the possibilities of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. The political scientist noted that the head of state is maneuvering, but it is becoming increasingly difficult for him.
Earlier, on August 26, Interior Minister Ivica Dacic reported on the use of physical force by protesters in front of the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad in order to prevent police officers from approaching the building. It was clarified that the dean had called the police. At the same time, law enforcement officers, according to the Izvestia source, tried not to use force.
Prior to that, on August 23, protesters in Serbia blocked a roundabout in the town of Obrenovac. After that, the crowd along the traffic jam went to the city center, chanting calls for the resignation of the government.
Anti-government protests began after 15 people died in the collapse of the railway station in Novi Sad in November 2024. The protesters blocked bridges and roads.
