- The family of a swimmer who disappeared in the Bosphorus intends to sue the Turkish media
Media representatives will be held accountable in court for publishing false and unverified information about Russian swimmer Mikhail Svechnikov, who disappeared in the Bosphorus. Alyona, a relative of the athlete, told Izvestia about this on August 27.
Earlier it was reported that a signal from Svechnikov's tracker was allegedly caught in Turkey. It was specified that such a chip can indicate whether a swimmer is in the water or not. However, the wife of the missing swimmer denied this information.
"This is false news. A lawyer is currently working to remove this link, and then the court will deal with it, " the woman said, refuting this information.
She stressed that such "stuffing" has a critical impact on the Svechnikov family.
"[The swimmer's wife] Antonina is in a very bad condition right now, upset. She is in a panic, hopefully waiting for any news, and here it says that some kind of signal is being given. <...> It's very ugly to upset a family like that," she added.
Svechnikov went missing on August 24. A professional swimmer did not reach the finish line across the Bosphorus in Istanbul. After swimming 500-600 m, the athlete disappeared from sight. Honored Master of Sports, world record holder in swimming Nikolai Skvortsov suggested that the man could have been swept away by the current.
The wife of the missing swimmer expressed her intention to request a video of Svechnikov's full swim. She is going to appeal to the prosecutor's office and get a written opinion from the consulate about which forces were involved in the search. In addition, the wife of the missing man and his relative are searching on the water with rescuers. Subsequently, the Istanbul authorities announced the beginning of an investigation into the causes and circumstances of Svechnikov's disappearance.
All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
