- In Germany, it was proposed to introduce compulsory military service, including for women
Thomas Rewekamp, Chairman of the Bundestag Defense Committee, considers it necessary to make military service in the Bundeswehr mandatory not only for men, but also for women. This was reported by the Tagesspiegel newspaper on August 26.
According to him, voluntary service or the resumption of compulsory service only for men will not be enough in the long run.
"I believe that we can expect from every man and woman, as well as from every person of German and foreign origin, that he or she will devote himself or herself to serving our society for one year," said Revekamp.
According to him, about 700,000 people graduate from German schools and universities every year, and the authorities need to explain to them that they must contribute to "peace, freedom, democracy and prosperity." According to Rebekamp, it is unfair that now neither women nor foreigners living in Germany can be required to perform military service.
At the same time, he clarified that the amendment to the basic law on the introduction of universal military conscription for both men and women would not gain a majority of votes in the Bundestag.
The Berliner Zeitung (BZ) newspaper reported on August 9 that the German authorities have begun to rearm the Bundeswehr in order to make the strongest army in Europe. It was noted that within the framework of this project, Germany plans to submit more than 60 arms purchase contracts to Parliament for approval by the end of the year.
