Kazakh football club (FC) Kairat from Almaty defeated Scottish Celtic in the playoff round of the UEFA Champions League qualification and secured its participation in the group stage of the tournament for the first time. The match took place on August 26 and ended with a score of 3:2 in a penalty shootout.

The teams played two matches in total. The first match ended in a draw, and in the second leg the teams failed to score in regular and extra time, but the team from Kazakhstan won in a penalty shootout. The winning goal was scored by Russian defender Egor Sorokin.

The future opponents of Kairat will be determined after the draw, which will be held on August 28. The general stage of the tournament will begin on September 16.

This is a historic achievement for Kairat, because previously only Astana had reached the group stage of the Champions League from Kazakhstani clubs in the 2015/2016 season.

On August 13, the French club PSG beat the British Tottenham and became the winner of the UEFA Super Cup. The meeting took place in the Italian city of Udine and ended in a draw in regular time with a score of 2:2. At the same time, the French club was able to defeat its opponent in a penalty shootout with a score of 4:3.
