In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of Wednesday, August 27, and which church holidays are celebrated on this day.

Folk signs for August 27, 2025

In Russia, on August 27, the feast of Micah Tikhovey was celebrated. This name is due to the fact that the wind was closely monitored on this day. According to him, the peasants predicted what kind of weather to expect in September. So, a strong wind foreshadows a cold month. And if there is no wind, then autumn will be warm.

There was also a tradition of counting fallen leaves. Our ancestors believed that the more leaves fell from the trees at the end of summer, the more successful the year would be.

It was also with Micah that the wedding season began in Russia. Matchmaking was scheduled for this date in order to have a wedding on Pokrov (it will be celebrated on October 14). It was believed that young people who decided to tie the knot on a holiday would live happily ever after.

Other signs of the day:

According to popular beliefs, it is forbidden to bake bread and pies on the holiday, even lean ones. It is believed that the dough can bring evil. Young people are not recommended to wear old or shabby clothes, as this promises loneliness.

What is the church holiday on August 27th?

On August 27, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Old Testament prophet Micah the Morafite, a contemporary of the prophet Isaiah. He lived in the 8th century BC and came from the city of Morafi, south of Jerusalem, for which he was nicknamed the Morafite. Micah openly criticized the vices of the Jewish and Israeli kingdoms, and also predicted the destruction of Israel because of human sins and the appearance of the Savior in Bethlehem.

In the church tradition, the prophet is revered as a symbol of a righteous life and unwavering loyalty to God. The Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of the Prophet Micah annually at the end of summer (August 14, Old style). This tradition developed in the first decades following the baptism of Rus.

On the same date, believers remember the Venerable Arkady of Vyazemsky and Novotorzhsky, who lived at the beginning of the XI century. He came from the city of Vyazma from simple, pious parents who taught him prayer and obedience from childhood. Having matured, the young man chose foolishness for Christ's sake as his feat. He ate alms and slept wherever he had to. He was helped to avoid spiritual dangers by an experienced mentor, the Novotorzhsky wonderworker, St. Ephraim. Together with him, Arkady participated in the foundation of the temple and monastery, and then became a monk in the newly built monastery.

Prayers on August 27

It is believed that Micah the Morafite is able to protect against natural disasters such as fires, protect against diseases and ailments. The Orthodox prayer book does not contain any special prayer to the prophet. You can address him in your own words or read the canon of the holiday. They pray to Arkady Vyazemsky and Novotorzhsky, asking for deliverance from troubles and sorrows, as well as for the salvation of the soul.

The Canon to Micah the Morafite

Song 1

"Having passed through the water like dry land, and having escaped the Egyptian evil, the Israelite cries out: To the Redeemer and our God we will take. Holy prophet of God Micah, pray to God for us. As a mirror truly pure of God and of the divine, stand before the Founder, O blessed One, who prays to save those who sing to you by faith from adversity. You are full of spiritual understanding, Micah, and you have learned wisdom from God, for your mind is very pure. Preaching the prophecy piously, the Lord reclaims that you will appear from heaven to earth, blessed be He who has appeared to us."

Song 3

"You are the confirmation of those who flow to You, O Lord, You are the Light of those who are darkened, and my spirit sings to You. Your tongue is the reed of the Divine Spirit, and you have revealed to us the fulfillment of the future. You have shown yourself in Bethlehem, the Prince of all, the Savior, and the Mentor. You were known to those who exist more than our minds, prophetic, glorious prophetesses, enlightening us. You were the most manifest Mountain, O Most Pure One, on which You ascended, the Lord appeared, to which we are now running."

Prayer to Arkady Novotorzhsky

"Heavenly reward of Christ, young vine, exalted praise to the Orthodox Church, strong visor and affirmation of our city and monastery, quiet joy and consolation to all who flow to you with faith and love, our venerable and God-bearing Father Arkady. In the days of the grave evils that have beset our country, we fervently seek you as a prayer book of grace and a speedy helper, and we fervently ask you: pour out your warm intercession to the All-merciful Savior, that he may be merciful to our iniquities, that he may establish our country, this city, this monastery, and all the cities and towns with peace and love. May God preserve us from every evil condition, from gladness and perdition, and from internecine strife; may the holy Church deliver us from fierce persecution, from the deadly and soul-destroying plagues of unbelief, may she strengthen and increase us; may she free all of us from those who offend and hate us, and grant all that is useful for a temporary life and eternal salvation Through your intercession and intercession, may the most honorable and magnificent name of the Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be glorified by you forever and ever. Amen to that."
