The discussion of the candidacy of the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen for the post of president of Germany in the 2027 elections is connected with attempts to release her from responsibility. This was announced on August 26 by Andrei Klimov, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs.

"Ursula's situation is quite complicated: she can not only be removed from her post as chief European Commissioner, but also be prosecuted. The election to the post of president of Germany will give her additional protection, at least within the country," the deputy said.

He stressed that von der Leyen had made many mistakes within the framework of the European Union (EU), including the agreement with the United States, which negatively affected the EU economy and contributed to the abandonment of Russian energy resources. Klimov also expressed the opinion that she could have illegally seized significant funds.

In addition, the MP suggested that von der Leyen's appointment to the post of president of Germany may be an attempt to solve problems that have arisen due to her previous decisions.

"Von der Leyen was appointed to the European Union at one time so as not to interfere even with the former federal Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, but now the reverse is happening," he concluded.

The newspaper Spiegel reported on August 25 about the intentions of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to nominate von der Leyen for the post of President of Germany in the elections in 2027. Such a step would allow the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to go down in history as the party that would "give" the country the first female chancellor and the first female president.

At the same time, on August 2, the Bild newspaper, citing survey data, reported that more than half of German residents were dissatisfied with Ursula von der Leyen's activities. Also, 66% of German residents said that the trade agreement with the United States harms the German economy.
