- The Consulate General of the Russian Federation sent a request after the loss of a swimmer while swimming in the Bosphorus
The Russian Consulate General in Istanbul has sent an official request to the competent authorities and is in contact with the Turkish authorities regarding the disappearance of Russian swimmer Nikolai Svechnikov in the Bosphorus Strait. This was reported on August 25 in the Telegram channel of the department.
"According to information received on the evening of August 24 <...>, during the annual 6.5 km Intercontinental Swim across the Bosphorus Strait, Russian citizen <...> Svechnikov, born in 1995, who participated in the swim as part of a large group (more than 400 people) of swimmers from Russia, went missing," the report says.
According to the Russian Consulate General, the relatives of the missing swimmer were informed about the incident. Turkish emergency services are conducting search operations.
The disappearance of Russian swimmer Svechnikov during a swim through the Bosphorus Strait was reported earlier that day. A 29-year-old professional swimmer from Moscow did not reach the finish line when swimming across the Bosphorus in Istanbul. After swimming 500-600 m, the athlete disappeared from sight. According to one version, the man could have had a leg cramp, after which he was carried away by the current.
On the same day, Honored Master of Sports, world record holder in swimming Nikolai Skvortsov, in an interview with Izvestia, suggested that Svechnikov could have been swept away by the current. According to him, such long-distance swims, especially in open water, are always dangerous and involve many risks.
