According to the National Weather Service, extreme heat warnings are in effect in California, Oregon, Washington and the Southwest Territories.
"A prolonged period of warm temperatures will begin tomorrow and continue at least until the beginning of next week," forecasters in Seattle said, noting that the heat was approaching record highs.
In Phoenix on Sunday, the temperature reached 111 °F (about 44 °C), and in Tucson — 108 °F (42 °C). Meteorologists have warned of a high risk of heat stroke, especially for people without access to air conditioning. Oregon and southern Washington also recorded temperature records. In Portland, the heat of 102 °F (38.8 °C) beat the previous maximum of 1942. One of the participants of the Hood to Coast race in Portland was hospitalized after heat stroke, his condition has stabilized.
In California, the heat has increased the risk of wildfires. Extreme temperature warnings remain in place for southern and northern areas of the state, where last weekend was one of the hottest of the year.
Earlier, on August 14, it was reported that 200 people had been evacuated from the Turkish province of Mersin due to forest fires. 344 specialists, 122 units of ground equipment and nine vessels of specialized aviation were involved in extinguishing the flames. The victims are temporarily housed in dormitories in the Silifkinsky district.
