US Ambassador Kushner accused Macron of inaction against anti-Semitism
U.S. Ambassador to France Charles Kushner has sent a letter to President Emmanuel Macron. He expressed "deep concern" about the surge in anti-Semitism and the inaction of the French authorities. This was reported by the newspaper Le Figaro on August 24.
The letter, which was obtained by AFP, was a continuation of criticism previously expressed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"Statements that denigrate Israel and gestures in recognition of the Palestinian state encourage extremists, incite violence and endanger Jewry in France," the diplomat wrote.
Kouchner stressed that in France "not a day goes by without attacks on Jews, desecration of synagogues and schools, as well as vandalism of Jewish businesses." According to him, even kindergartens have become targets of anti-Semitic attacks.
"Almost half of young French people say they have never heard of the Holocaust. Such ignorance makes us doubt the school curriculum in French schools," he said.
According to the French Interior Ministry, anti-Semitic acts have increased dramatically since the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the outbreak of the war in Gaza.
Earlier, on August 23, it was reported that Italian Ambassador Emanuela D'Alessandro had been summoned after her statement to Macron about providing security guarantees to Kiev. He stated that he himself should put on a mask and go to Ukraine.
