A spokesman for the DPRK General Staff said that the joint exercises of the United States and South Korea, Ulji Freedom Shield, forced the DPRK army to increase combat readiness. This was reported on August 23 by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

"Joint exercises <... They are extremely provocative and aimed at a sudden preemptive attack on the DPRK," the representative of the Korean People's Army stressed.

He also noted the participation of British ships and other member countries of the UN Command in multinational exercises, which, according to the DPRK, destroys the balance of power in the region.

"Reckless exercises by the United States and South Korea are extremely exacerbating tensions on the Korean peninsula and doubling military threats against the DPRK," the spokesman added.
