- The Indian Foreign Minister called the US criticism of the country for the purchase of oil from the Russian Federation funny.
The United States and the European Union (EU) accuse India of buying Russian oil, but they themselves continue to buy fossil fuels from the republic. Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar drew attention to this on August 23.
"Look, it's funny when people working for the pro-business American administration accuse others of doing business. It's really interesting," he said.
According to the diplomat, if Western countries have problems with the purchase of oil or petroleum products from India, they should simply abandon it.
"No one is forcing you to buy. But Europe buys, America buys. If you don't like it, don't buy it," he added.
On August 21, the republic's ambassador to the Russian Federation, Vinay Kumar, told Izvestia that India would not abandon purchases of Russian oil. He added that the country is sensitive to any measures and any actions of those who encroach on its sovereignty.
On August 6, US President Donald Trump signed a decree imposing an additional 25% duty on imports from India. The White House clarified that this measure was introduced in connection with India's "direct or indirect" import of petroleum products from the Russian Federation.
