In order to reach an agreement on guarantees of Ukraine's security after the conflict ends, Western countries must take into account Russia's basic interests. This was announced by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

"I never said that Russia should have the right to veto security guarantees. But there must be a consensus on security guarantees that takes into account Russia's basic interests," he said in an interview with NBC, published on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry on August 24.

According to him, it is unacceptable to exclude Russia from security issues on its borders. The Foreign Minister stressed that the conflict in Ukraine began due to the fact that the territory controlled by the Kiev regime was turned into a stronghold for inflicting a "strategic defeat" on the Russian Federation.

The minister added that Russia had launched a special military operation in order to protect Russian-speaking people from the "openly Nazi" regime in Kiev.

"Russian troops are on this land not for the sake of the territory itself, but in order to ensure that weapons capable of reaching Russian territory will never be deployed on it," Lavrov said.

On August 21, the Reuters news agency, citing the US military, reported that the United States and a number of European countries had finalized proposals on security guarantees for Ukraine. It was noted that one of the options was to send European troops to the territory of Ukraine, and they would be commanded and controlled by the United States.

Lavrov said on August 20 that Russia agrees that security guarantees for Kiev should be provided on an equal basis with the participation of China, the United States, Britain, France and other countries. He added that in the issue of guarantees of Ukraine's security, it is necessary to focus on the developments achieved during the negotiations.
