- Reuters has learned about the White House's intention to transfer 20 tons of plutonium for nuclear power plants to the business.
The White House intends to transfer about 20 tons of plutonium to U.S. energy companies as fuel for reactors at nuclear power plants. This was reported by the Reuters news agency, citing sources on Friday, August 22.
"The Trump administration plans to provide about 20 tons of Cold War-era plutonium obtained from dismantled nuclear warheads to American energy companies as potential fuel for reactors," the publication says.
The plan is still under development, however, an agency source informed that the US Department of Energy (DOE) is already ready to announce this to the industry in order to request proposals from it. It is assumed that the plutonium will be transferred either completely free of charge or for a minimum amount, however, all the costs of transporting fuel and building energy facilities will fall on industry.
"20 tons will be taken from a larger stockpile of 34 tons of weapons—grade plutonium, which the United States had previously committed to dispose of in accordance with the non-proliferation agreement with Russia concluded in 2000," the agency said.
Earlier, on August 18, it was reported that Google, together with the American nuclear energy company Kairos Power, chose Tennessee as a location for the construction of a modern nuclear power plant.
On May 24, Trump ordered the construction of 10 nuclear reactors in the country by 2030. The head of the US Department of Energy was also instructed to ensure the provision of resources for restarting closed nuclear power plants (NPP), increasing the capacity of existing ones and completing the construction of those nuclear power plants that were suspended.
