In Tallinn, Russian-speaking residents united in a union before the elections
In Estonia, Russian-speaking residents have created an Electoral Union of Tallinn residents and intend to participate in the autumn elections. This was reported by Postimees on August 22.
"The city spends hundreds of millions of euros annually, but instead of solving real problems, priority is given to the beautiful rather than the necessary. We are going to the elections to change this system — to make the budget transparent, expenses reasonable, and decisions subordinate to the interests of citizens," the words are quoted from the official page of the union.
It is noted that the electoral union was headed by Olga Ivanova, a former deputy of the Riigikogu and ex-elder of the largest district of the Estonian capital Lasnamae. The association is also represented by economist, tax consultant and blogger Anna Shendik, former member of the United Left Party and entrepreneur Julia Sommer and bus driver Irina Kiele.
Ivanova stated that the association stands for Tallinn to be governed competently and without corruption. According to her, Elder Lasnamae receives 6.3 thousand euros, but "does not earn them."
"This is a mediocre leadership that cannot be tolerated anymore," the head of the union stressed.
She also called it a wrong decision to abandon the Russian-language regional newspapers, from which the elderly drew information.
"We, Russian-speaking residents of Estonia, are tired of being silent. We are tired of hearing <insults> coming from the lips of not only random people on the street, but also those who sit in government chairs, who call themselves politicians, public leaders, defenders of democracy," the manifesto published by the Electoral Union says.
In January, Bloomberg reported that Russian-speaking residents of Estonia, who make up about 30% of the total population, are being subjected to rights violations by the government. At the same time, it is noted that the UN condemned these actions as "at least partially discriminatory." Some representatives of the country's Government and security agencies raised questions about these measures.
